Who can use Circadin®?
Circadin® is indicated as monotherapy for the short-term treatment of primary insomnia characterized by poor Quality of Sleep in patients who are aged 55 or over.
Sleeping problems are common and can be caused by a variety of different factors.
The medical term for sleep disturbances is insomnia and includes difficulty in getting to sleep, difficulty in staying asleep and poor quality of sleep – all result with feeling un-refreshed in the morning and distressed during the day.
Many new publications have shown that it is is the quality of sleep and not just the quantity that is important.
Good quality sleep helps feeling refreshed in the morning and improves next day functioning and general feeling during the day.
The newest insomnia medications should not only help people fall asleep, but also improve the quality of sleep and next day performance – these medications should help improve the entire 24 hours.
Melatonin is a natural human hormone that controls the circadian rhythm (a built-in 24-hour clock), including the time going to sleep.
Endogenous melatonin levels usually start rising as it gets dark, causing a “sleepy” feeling.
Circadin® is a novel sleep drug that provides natural sleep for insomnia patients, offering an effective treatment for their sleep difficulties (quality and initiation) and is the only sleep drug shown to improve daytime functioning.
Prolonged release melatonin mimics the physiological melatonin secretion and therefore preserves the natural sleep architecture.
